Rare lathe turned spirit vessel by Bruce Bernson buckeye & ebony

This is a rare an very special lathe turned spirit vessel made by Santa Barbara artist Bruce Bernson. Bernson was a self taught wood turner seen in art shows around the country and the Smithsonian Institute. He was featured in many magazine and newspaper articles and had a cover of an industry magazine. He is considered one of the best folk artists alive in America today. This is his most special piece and very few were made. This bulbous body on the spirit vessel is made of Buckeye burl extracted from the earth after a major fire in Painted Cave in the 1980's. The elegantly turned finial is made of Ebony wood from Africa. It is a very rare and expensive substance. This vase is 4" high by 8 1/2" in diameter, the finial is 7" tall. It is accompanied by an Asian pecan display stand. This piece is artist signed and dated 1989. The artist has not worked since the early 2000's due to health issues and it is doubtful a piece of this importance will be done by him again. Own a treasure.
