THE TRUE BEAUTY WITHIN VINTAGE/ANTIQUE ENGAGEMENT RINGS BY BAYA GATTER OF ETERNAL FINE JEWELS
It all started with a simple email inquiry from a young man, who was a university student at the time. For months he was searching the internet for the perfect vintage engagement ring. After finding a sapphire/diamond ring, in our little cyber boutique, Eternal Fine Jewels, he was elated about the history, design and condition of the ring and knew that his "love" as he referred to the woman of his dreams, would treasure the ring just as much. Upon purchasing and receiving the ring, he said he would email me upon presenting his intended with it.
Vintage/antique engagement rings hold a special place in the hearts of many and are often the ring of choice for many future brides or their intended grooms. For many couples, such a ring symbolizes the true meaning of their relationship; longevity, tradition, endurance and most importantly, their commitment to each other. As individual as these rings are, a couple may also see within such a ring the uniqueness of their own relationship, as well as their own deep and everlasting love as these rings represent eternal timelessness.
Within the fast paced, over scheduled, overloaded lives we live today, there is a yearning for a time when life was simpler and these rings, from a by-gone era, are reminiscent of those days. A vintage/antique engagement ring for many future brides symbolizes a hidden history, a poignant emotional connection of a love affair of long ago and a new one beginning.
The emotional connection to such a ring can
be of a sentimental nature, especially if the ring belonged to a family member. When Prince William became engaged to Catherine Middleton he gave her his mother's, the late Princess Diana's, sapphire/diamond engagement ring because it was his way of making his mother a part of this most special occasion. "It was my way to make sure my mother did not miss out on today and the excitement that we are going to spend the rest of our lives together," Prince William shared with the world media upon the official announcement of their engagement. By giving Catherine the famous and glorious ring that Diana personally chose for herself, it would hold an endearing place in all their hearts.
For many women who only wear and collect vintage/antique jewelry, it signifies their passion for cultural history since each era had its own style. These rings are over 50 years old and date back to the Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco Periods. The various style periods make these rings stand out and the choices are quite vast so that a bride-to-be could choose her ring from the era she preferred.
It's about personal style, individuality, originality, rarity, tradition, history, sentimentality and craftsmanship. These rings have stood the test of time since many are heirloom pieces that have been passed down from one generation to the next. Therefore, their quality, workmanship, strength and durability are proof of their longevity.
A modern day, contemporary engagement ring does
not have the history or sentimental value that an older engagement ring possesses. Today's rings are mass produced; you see similarly designed rings in many jewelry stores. Today, you walk into a jewelry store, choose the setting, style of diamond, and within a few days, walk out with a ring that another future bride can have replicated.
As popular trends come and go every season, these classic engagement rings are timeless in their beauty. These rings were handmade with fine filigree work and delicate designs. Diamonds were meticulously handset. While many of these rings were very fine in design, others were very bold with geometric and symmetrical themes and set with vibrant gemstones—sapphires, rubies and emeralds. They were created by old time jewelers who used different techniques. Quality was superior as these rings were made by exceptionally skilled jewelers.
To recreate such a ring today would be very costly and that is why an original vintage/antique engagement ring is more affordable. In many cases, especially for the budget conscious, they are more economical when compared to a brand new ring.
Vintage and antique rings stand out from contemporary rings because of their diverse and intriguing designs. There is an unspoken beauty and mystery because of their historical significance. Their styles make them stand out when compared to the more common every day contemporary ring.
The famous expressions, "diamonds are a girl's best friend" and "diamonds are
forever", best symbolize the fascination, splendor and love affair associated with diamonds. Diamonds symbolize strength and since they last forever, they are the gemstone of choice to represent a couple's eternal love.
Some of the old world diamond cuts include rose, old mine, single and old European cut. These styles of diamonds capture the style and character of a by-gone era. They were hand cut with very limited tools which was a very laborious task. Vintage diamonds have a more subtle glow compared to the brilliance of modern cut diamonds because of the different cutting methods of those eras. As well, the emphasis focused on their maximum carat weight.
Today's diamonds with their modern cuts, emphasis on brilliance (sparkle) and size, and use of modern equipment and technology make for a substantially higher priced ring in today's marketplace.
Vintage/antique engagement rings can be more affordable since a smaller diamond can appear bigger than its actual size because of the ornamentally decorated settings. These rings, from a by-gone era, are treasures to be found and cherished.
Several months passed, when one day I received the promised email. The subject line read "She Said Yes." In his heartfelt email, my customer shared the details of his proposal and how much his fiancé loved the ring. He concluded his email by saying...
"Thank you so much for connecting me with such a grand piece. It's just right, it has class, it has style, and it has a
story behind it. All in all, perfect".
We invite you to view antique and vintage engagement rings and more at Eternal Fine Jewels and check out their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/RainbowTrinket
